Fall Conference

FACL’s 2011 Fall Conference - November 12, 2011 (9 am to 5 pm)

The FACL’s 5th Annual Fall Conference will be held at the Osgoode Professional Development Centre, 1 Dundas St. W, 26th Floor.

FACL’s Annual Conference offers participants a terrific professional development and networking opportunity. It will be a full-day event, followed by a post-conference banquet dinner.

  • effective mediation briefs and tactics;

  • strategies for motions;

  • criminal and constitutional updates;

  • family law updates;

  • surviving articling;

  • sole practitioner essentials;

  • progression in legal practice – ethnicity as a factor.

Participants will have the opportunity to hear from the following featured speakers:

  • Albert Wong – Albert Wong has served over 30 years in the Canadian Forces, and has extensive public affairs experience. He was the lead public affairs officer in handling the fallout from the Canadian Forces deployment to Somalia affairs and served as an advisor on the inquiry into a catastrophic fire onboard the submarine HMCS Chicoutimi. In 2000, he helped establish the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE) where he served as the military spokesperson for the UN Force Commander. From 2001 to 2004, he served at SHIRBRIG – the Multinational Stand-by Forces High Readiness Brigade for UN Peacekeeping Operations. Currently, Mr. Wong is the president of AKW Global Enterprises, a public affairs consulting firm. View Albert Wong's biography.

  • Anil Kapoor – Anil Kapoor practices criminal law and regulatory law, both at trial and on appeals, as well as national security law. He has appeared numerous times before the Supreme Court of Canada, and provincial Courts of Appeal in Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan.  He authored Kapoor’s Criminal Appeal Review, a LexisNexis online publication from 1999 to 2005, as well as numerous other publications in various legal and academic journals.  In 2006, Mr. Kapoor was appointed Commission Counsel to the Commission of Inquiry into the Investigation of the Bombing of Air India Flight 182 (the Air India Public Inquiry).  In 2008, the federal government appointed Mr. Kapoor to a roster of Special Advocates who are security cleared to conduct National Security litigation pursuant to the security certificate provisions of the Immigration Refugee Protection Act and in a variety of other contexts.

Post-Conference Banquet

A Banquet dinner will take place at 6 p.m. after the Conference.

The cost of the banquet is $55/person; $45/person if you are a student or unwaged.

Please RSVP for the Banquet by November 4, 2011 as we must book tables in advance. For any dinner requests received after this date, we will try our best to accommodate but cannot guarantee a spot.

How to Register

Early Bird Fees Until November 4, 2011: $60 Member, including renewal of membership for 2011-2012; $70 Non-Member, including new membership; and $20 for Students, including student membership.

After November 4, 2011: $75 Member; $85 Non-Member; and $30 for Students.

Out-of-town students may apply for a travel subsidy.  Please keep receipts.  Maximum reimbursement is $30.

To register for the Conference and/or Banquet, you must complete the Conference Session Selection Form and Membership Application Form 2011-2012 if you have not already applied for/renewed your FACL membership for 2011-2012. To avoid disappointment and to enjoy the early bird rate, please register before , November 4, 2011.
