Call for Aid to Earthquake/Tsunami Victims

FACL extends its sincerest condolences to those affected by the earthquake and tsunami, as well as the nuclear aftermath. We encourage FACL members to contribute to the disaster relief efforts. You are invited to a fundraising event hosted by Toronto to Japan titled Hope Blossoms, which will take place on April 21, 2011 -- for more information, please see the attached flyer and/or visit: http://torontotojapan.ca. LSUC Bencher Elections

The 2011 LSUC bencher election campaign is currently underway; the deadline to vote is April 29, 2011 at 5:00 PM. There are seven FACL members running for bencher: Lee Akazaki, Raj Anand, Kevin Doan, Avvy Go, Julie Jai, Jeffrey Lem, and Wennie Lee; for further information about their campaigns and/or other candidates, please review the Voting Guide. Also, as reported in Canadian Lawyer Magazine, the Law Times, and Precedent Magazine, FACL -- in association with the OBA's Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Committee (SOGIC), the Women's Law Association of Ontario (WLAO), the South Asian Bar Association (SABA), the Canadian Association of Black Lawyers (CABL), the Arab Canadian Lawyers Association (ACLA), and the Hispanic Ontario Lawyer Association (HOLA) -- has surveyed bencher candidates about their perspectives on equity, diversity, and access to justice in the profession and in the larger community. 2011 Top 25 Canadian Immigrants Awards

FACL is proud to announce that Board member Immanuel Lanzaderas is one of 75 finalists for Canada's Top 25 Canadian Immigrants Awards, as presented by RBC and Canadian Immigrant Magazine, an online and print resource dedicated to helping Canadian immigrants settle in Canada successfully. These Awards celebrate the achievements and contributions of immigrants to Canada; past winners include Olympic champion Donovan Bailey, VANOC chief John Furlong, and CBC's Ian Hanomansing. Immanuel's work with the student clubs at the University of Toronto and Queen's University Faculty of Law, his volunteer efforts with Legal Aid, his church, and in the larger community, and his tireless dedication to FACL demonstrate his commitment to social justice and equity for all Canadians. CBA Touchstone Award

The Touchstone Award celebrates the accomplishments of an individual or an organization who has excelled in promoting equality in the legal profession, the judiciary, or the legal community in Canada. The Award recognizes successful promotion or furthering of equality at the national level and/or a significant contribution relating to race, gender, disability, sexual orientation or other diversity issues in the recipient’s community. It will be presented at the Touchstone Reception held as part of the CBA Canadian Legal Conference in August. The nomination deadline is

Events and Conferences

Launch of "Road to Justice" Website

FACL wishes to thank all members who attended the event on March 29, 2011, co-hosted by the Metro Toronto Chinese & Southeast Asian Legal Clinic and the LSUC to celebrate the launch of Road to Justice, a website dedicated to increasing awareness about the historical injustices in the form of legislated discrimination imposed by Canadian governments on people of Chinese descent in Canada. (For those who were unable to attend the launch, the webcast of the event will also be archived on the LSUC's website.) We encourage you to visit the website to learn more about the inspirational stories of Chinese Canadians and the role of legal professionals and activists in fighting against legislated discrimination.

Diversity in Leadership: Racialized Minorities and the Canadian Criminal Justice System

FACL members are invited to the annual Diversity in Leadership Conference being hosted by the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT), in partnership with the Durham Regional Police Service. This year’s theme relates to racialized minorities and the Canadian Criminal Justice System. The conference, which is being held on May 4-6, 2011, aims to foster an open dialogue among all stakeholders to identify current challenges and future strategies that enhance the system’s relationship with an increasing visible minority population. NAPABA 2011 Northeast Regional Conference

The Connecticut Asian Pacific American Bar Association (CAPABA) will be hosting the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA) 2011 Northeast Regional Conference in Stamford, Connecticut, on June 3-4, 2011.
