June 2011

We have a great summer lined up!

This past month's highlights include a story about DiverseCity, which includes comments from FACL members in the Toronto Star, and a successful Asian and South Asian Heritage event with the Law Society of Upper Canada.

Upcoming we have a call to BC lawyers, a NAPABA survey on diversity in large law firms, and a networking event. Look for a big announcement to come with FACL's summer plans!

BC Lawyers? A Call To Join!

FACL is looking to expand our presence in BC. FACL members will be in Vancouver this fall for a meet and greet! If you are a BC lawyer or have friends who are interested in helping out, please contact Ian Hu, VP Membership, at facl.ontario@facl.ca.

DiverseCity Report Features FACL Member Sandra Nishikawa

Congratulations to FACL member Sandra Nishikawa, Counsel, Justice Canada whose work on diversity on adjudicative administrative tribunals was cited in the recent DiverseCity Report: A Snapshot of Diverse Leadership in the GTA, 2011. See http://www.diversecitytoronto.ca

FACL President Julia Shin Doi and Board Member Chia-Yi Chua profiled in the Toronto Star

FACL President, Julia Shin Doi and FACL Board member, Chia-yi Chua were profiled in The Toronto Star's article on diversity in the legal profession by Nicholas Keung. Julia is quoted as saying that "A diverse background brings perspective and an understanding of the social context in advising clients." The Star reports that "Chia-yi Chua, a native of Singapore and partner at McCarthy Tétrault, a Canadian law firm known for its “competency-based” diversity recruitment, said the sector has to do a better job attracting and retaining visible minorities." The Star quotes Chia-yi: “There is no doubt in my mind,” said Chua, “that having great mentors makes the world of difference in one’s career.”

NAPABA Survey Needs Your Input!

KWe need your help to take the NAPABA survey evaluating the advancement of Asian Pacific Americans in large law firms! In particular, we need European American / Caucasian law firm attorneys (partners and associates) to complete the survey.

The NAPABA-NLF Diversity Task Force survey entitled "Experiences in Advancing in Large Law Firms" was released last year to the managing partners of the top 200 Am Law Firms in the United States. We encouraged these law firms to participate in the hope of gaining insights from personal experiences of partners and associates/other attorneys to identify patterns and trends of success as well as potential obstacles to career advancement. The survey was prompted by studies from major bar associations that revealed that Asian Pacific Americans have the lowest or among the lowest conversion rates from associate to partner compared with other ethnic groups. To access the survey, click here (for partners) or here (for associates/counsel/staff attorneys). For information about how to participate in this study, contact NAPABA Staff Assistant Melanie Robinson at Mrobinson@napaba.org.
