Asian and South Asian Heritage Month

The month of May is Asian and South Asian Heritage Month. The Law Society of Upper Canada, FACL, and the South Asian Bar Association are hosting a panel discussion and reception on May 24, 2011 at the Law Society of Upper Canada, 130 Queen St. West, Toronto.

A Call to Action Canada Conference, Tuesday May 17, 2011

Jon Casey of A Call to Action Canada announces the ACTAC conference:

I am writing to let you know that A Call to Action Canada's (ACTAC) third annual conference, which is being held on Tuesday May 17, 2011 in Toronto, has received Law Society accreditation for the CPD program, for six hours for each of the Professionalism and New Member CPD requirements. The date for payment of the early registration fee has been extended to Friday May 6, 2011.

Prior to his election in 2003 he practiced for over 25 years as a criminal defense lawyer. He taught part-time for over a decade at University of Western Ontario's Law School and helped establish a legal clinic to assist low-income clients. When he isn't running for his work, he runs. He started, and completed, 3 Boston marathons.

DiverseCity Counts: Release of Report on Diversity in Leadership in the GTA - JUNE 7, 2011

Join civic leaders for the release of a new report on diversity in leadership
Third annual report includes a new focus on the legal profession

Last year DiverseCity Counts found that only 14 per cent of GTA leaders are visible minorities, relative to 49.5 percent of the population. We have updated this figure and also taken a unique look at the legal profession. Join us, together with Ontario Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Eric Hoskins, for the release of the third DiverseCity Counts Report. We expect about 100 of the region's top corporate, public and voluntary sector leaders to attend. Tuesday, June 7, 9:30 - 11:00 a.m.

Parkdale and Kensington CLS looking for Mandarin/Cantonese Interpreter

Know any Mandarin/Cantonese speaking interpreters?

Parkdale Community Legal Services and Kensington Bellwoods Community Legal Services are in need of a part-time Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese) interpreter to perform interpretation and translation duties at both sites on an ongoing basis.

Time Commitment:
13-14 hours/week. (Parkdale - 1 afternoon/week, 6-7 hours; Kensington Bellwoods – 2 mornings per week, 7 hours total). Some evening work might be required.

Compensation: $19.20 per hour.
